iPhone Duo Orders Slip, but Some Dates Improve

Apple finally folded the iPhone. Your delivery date may need a calendar upgrade.

Apple's $1,999 iPhone Duo saw delivery estimates stretch into January 2027 within minutes of last Friday's preorders opening, proving that Apple fans will wait through the holidays for a phone that bends. Its first foldable still technically launches this Friday, Oct. 23—if you can actually find one.

Apple predictably calls demand "nothing short of extraordinary" but hasn't disclosed preorder totals. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman is less generous, calling the rollout a "major mistake": Apple reportedly scrapped a limited US and China debut to launch in over 70 countries simultaneously despite well-documented supply constraints.

Fortunately, some buyers in Japan and the US now report earlier delivery dates, including a December order magically moved to launch day. Apple hasn't confirmed these miracles, so your January ETA isn't necessarily destiny, but don't hold your breath for a surprise upgrade.

Planning a launch-day store ambush? Don't. Japan and South Korea temporarily require pickup reservations. US walk-in stock remains unconfirmed, and some stores have explicitly warned customers away. Apple's instruction to check pickup availability this Saturday, Oct. 24, is an empty promise of actual inventory.

Meanwhile, scammers are having a field day. Hong Kong police received 130 reports of unauthorized preorder purchases totaling about $637,000, criticizing Apple's convenient failure to activate 3D Secure authentication. Apple says it's busy reviewing orders and canceling the fraudulent transactions.

Why it matters: Manufactured scarcity makes for great launch theater but proves absolutely nothing about actual sales without real inventory figures. Check your existing order before paying an absurd reseller premium—and remember, Samsung already sells excellent foldables right now if Apple's walled garden isn't worth a three-month wait.

Anthropic's 5% Pledge Awaits the Fine Print

AI's latest competition: convincing everyone else they'll get a slice.

Pending shareholder approval, Anthropic intends to park 5% of its equity in a new Public Benefit Fund for nonprofits and AI-displaced workers. Conveniently, this sudden burst of philanthropy arrives just as the Claude developer gears up for a massive IPO.

The wholly owned LLC vehicle grants the company broad flexibility in distributing assets (and maintaining total control, naturally). Directors can bump the fund's stake by two percentage points every time Anthropic's valuation jumps 50% past a secret baseline. Top-ups aren't guaranteed, though the firm strictly banned using holdings for political lobbying.

Factoring in founder and staff pledges, roughly 20% of the company's stock is now officially earmarked for the public good. Yet logistics—like who picks the winners and how locked-up shares become spendable cash—remain a complete mystery. A theoretical stake in tomorrow doesn't pay this month's rent.

Not to be outdone in the billionaire philanthropy pageant, Elon Musk declared he'll give one of his personal SpaceX shares to every American child next year. With zero logistical details offered, parents can safely hold off refreshing their kids' brokerage accounts.

In a separate peace offering following backlash over unverified AI math research, OpenAI committed $5 million to a $15 million Simons Foundation initiative. The grant—also supported by Anthropic's computing resources—helps human mathematicians evaluate AI tools, though it conveniently ignores ongoing attribution disputes.

The tech sector's generosity announcements are arriving much faster than the instructions for collecting.

OpenCode Breach Puts AI API Keys at Risk

OpenCode's hosted Console sprang a leak, and it may have exposed OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google API keys. The company claims 1.4% of Console users were affected and notified; its co-founder insists that keys stored solely in local apps weren't dragged into the mess.

Surprise! Users are already reporting unauthorized AI bills.

If you received the dreaded notice, revoke and replace the affected keys in each provider's dashboard, update connected apps, and scrutinize your usage and billing. Deleting a key from Console doesn't actually revoke it, and Console budgets won't stop requests made directly to the providers. Set strict provider spending limits and alerts where available.

Bring your own key shouldn't mean bankroll somebody else's prompts.

Broadcom Wi-Fi Bug Bypasses Passwords for Router Takeovers

A 16-year-old vulnerability in Broadcom's Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) software is now old enough to drive, letting nearby attackers run code as root on millions of affected routers without a network password. Security researcher Quentin Kaiser proved the exploit works on Belgian ISP gateways, though he hasn't observed any real-world attacks yet.

While Broadcom quietly issued an incomplete fix in 2018, the chipmaker never secured a CVE identifier, leaving countless devices exposed and blissfully ignorant.

Kaiser's tested devices remained unpatched as of Oct. 15. Ask your ISP or manufacturer whether your model is affected and about potential fixes. Because turning off WPS won't necessarily stop an intrusion, permanently unsupported affected routers should head straight to the nearest dumpster.

Your Wi-Fi password can't guard a door this bug walks around.

Industry Shakeups

Cyber Job Ads Slide; AI Security Listings Surge

US cybersecurity job postings fell 26.4% to 235,786 in January–September 2026 compared with the same period last year, reaching a four-year low, CyberSN reports. Before you panic, remember that's fewer corporate wanted ads, not a headcount of actual humans shown the door.

Meanwhile, AI security engineer postings more than tripled to about 2,400. But those eye-popping gains are confined to a tiny niche—we aren't seeing an AI replacement boom swallowing the entire field. Case in point, penetration tester postings fell nearly in half.

Even AI's broader footprint requires a reality check: CyberSN's data shows 14.6% of postings mentioned AI or machine learning over the nine months, slightly below 2025's share. Sure, September spiked to 20%, but that's recent momentum, not a yearlong generative takeover. Last year's uncharacteristically hot market makes the annual comparison look especially brutal; zoom out, and overall postings were only about 4% below 2024.

And no, the robots aren't directly causing the overall hiring freeze. A separate Ramp–Revelio study of 21,559 US firms actually linked intensive AI adoption to roughly 10% higher employment after two years compared with slower-moving peers. (Though, to be fair, that finding isn't exclusive to the cyber realm.)

Rather than chasing shiny AI objects, security leaders still need warm bodies to staff core defenses. A spike in AI specialists won't magically triage your overflowing alert queue, fix busted access controls, or execute an incident response plan when things inevitably break. Teams must build automation skills without starving their everyday trenches.

Apparently, the fabled cyber talent shortage and corporate headcount budgets still aren't speaking.
