DeepMind's Genie 3: Build-Your-Own Reality

Step aside, SimCity, AI just unlocked SimEverything.

Google DeepMind's Genie 3 can craft minutes-long, 720p, fully interactive 3D worlds from a text prompt, remembering past frames to keep physics consistent.

That memory leap, which is multiple minutes versus Genie 2's 10- to 20-second goldfish brain, lets DeepMind drop its SIMA agent into warehouses, ski slopes, or fantasy realms to practice tasks and self-learn.

Researchers say world models like Genie 3 are crucial for embodied agents, cutting the cost and risk of real-world training. Limitations remain, including only brief sessions, limited action sets, and wonky snow behavior, but DeepMind hopes it will usher in a "Move 37" moment for AGI progress.

Why it matters: If AI can rehearse endlessly in photorealistic sandboxes, every robot, self-driving car, and digital assistant could level up faster, meaning our reality may soon be a sequel.

When AI robots practice only in simulated worlds, do you feel safer?

🛡️ Absolutely—better to crash pixels than real walls
🤷‍♂️ Somewhat—still need real-world testing
🚫 Not at all—simulations can't cover every scenario

Cognition's 'Nine-Month Nudge' for Windsurf Staff

When "welcome aboard" sounds more like "walk the plank."

Three weeks after scooping up coding-assistant rival Windsurf, Cognition laid off 30 employees, then offered the remaining 200+ an ultimatum: leave with nine months' pay or commit to six-day, 80-plus-hour weeks. CEO Scott Wu framed the demand as a culture filter: only mission-obsessed engineers need to stay.

Windsurfers already endured a collapsed $3 billion OpenAI deal and a chaotic talent raid just days before the acquisition; Google paid $2.4 billion to license Windsurf's technology and poached CEO Varun Mohan and key engineers to join DeepMind, leaving the remaining staff to face shifting equity valuations.

However, the buyout is offered on top of a full, accelerated cash-out of all employee stock. While Cognition doubled revenue overnight with Windsurf's $82 million annual recurring revenue, the move underscores the whiplash employees face in AI's acquisition arms race.

At least those nine months of severance, on top of an equity payout, could fund a very long vacation, assuming they're not debugging on the beach.

SonicWall SSLVPN Under Active Ransomware Fire

Hackers, believed to include the Akira gang, are exploiting a suspected zero-day in Gen 7 SonicWall firewalls, specifically TZ and NSa models, to bypass MFA and hit domain controllers within hours.

Security firm Huntress has logged around 20 related incidents since July 25, prompting it and Arctic Wolf to urge admins to disable SSLVPN or lock it to trusted IPs.

SonicWall is investigating, promising a firmware update if the flaw is confirmed.

The recommended triage? Cut VPN access, purge dormant accounts, and enable botnet filtering before your network becomes the next encryption hostage.

If "temporary VPN shutdown" sounds painful, wait until "entire file server renamed .akira."

Google Patches Android 16 Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

Google's August security bulletin fixes CVE-2025-48530, a critical system bug that, when combined with other flaws, could let attackers hijack Android 16 devices remotely.

Most Pixel devices began receiving the RCE patch on August 5; other vendors, such as Samsung, will roll it out next.

The update, which comes after a quiet July with no security patches, fixes six vulnerabilities in total (two critical and four high-severity flaws), but CVE-2025-48530 is the headliner, reminding users that skipping updates is like leaving your front door ajar with snacks inside.

When in doubt, update. Your thumbs can thank you later.

Amazon's Kuiper Snags NBN's Rural-Net Deal

Australia's NBN Co chose Amazon's still-in-beta Project Kuiper over Starlink to replace aging Sky Muster satellites, promising faster low-Earth-orbit broadband to more than 300,000 outback premises by mid-2026.

Kuiper has only 78 of its planned 3,200+ satellites launched but backs the constellation with a reported $9.7 billion (AU$15 billion) investment.

Analysts cite "sovereign risk" in relying solely on Musk-controlled Starlink, with Canberra reportedly wary of tying critical infrastructure to a single company subject to unpredictable US politics.

For Amazon, the contract provides a marquee customer before Kuiper's commercial debut and a strategic foothold against Starlink's more than 350,000 Aussie users.

Blazing broadband for the bush—just add ~3,100 more satellites and a roo-friendly dish.
